Extra disk space for your server, billed by the hour

Add 10 GB to 2 TB of extra storage to a server on Vultr, DigitalOcean or Hetzner, pay by the gigabyte per hour from your crypto balance, and grow it when you need more.

In short

An extra disk is more storage attached to a server you already run, from 10 GB up to 2 TB. You pick the size in gigabytes, it is attached in about a minute, and you pay for the gigabytes by the hour from the same crypto balance as the server. It is offered on all three providers we resell: Vultr, DigitalOcean and Hetzner.

When an extra disk makes sense

  • Data bigger than the plan's disk. A database, a media library, a blockchain node or a backup archive, without moving to a larger plan whose extra CPU and RAM you do not need.
  • Growing storage. Start with 50 GB and enlarge the disk later, with no reinstall and no new server.
  • Keeping data apart from the system. Code and OS on the plan's own disk, bulk data on a separate one.

How it works

  • Size. From 10 GB to 2 TB per disk, up to 5 disks on one server.
  • Price. A rate per gigabyte per month, shown on the server page before you confirm. Billing is hourly, and one calendar month never costs more than the monthly price.
  • Growing. A disk can be enlarged at any time, and the added gigabytes are charged at once. It cannot be shrunk.
  • Using it. On Linux the disk appears as a new device, and the server page shows the commands to format and mount it. You keep full control of the filesystem.

What to know first

A disk belongs to one server and lives as long as that server does. Disks cannot be snapshotted and are not part of server backups: if you delete the server, or your balance reaches zero, the disk is deleted with its data. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot lose. Extra disks are not available for bare metal, and not in every location; where a disk cannot be added, the server page says why.

Billing and payment

Disks are billed from the same prepaid balance as servers, by the hour, with no minimum term. The first hour is charged when the disk is created (never less than $0.02) and the charge stops when you delete the disk. The first hour is refunded only if the disk could not be created. Details are in the Refunds & Billing policy.

How to start with crypto

  • 1. Sign up with an email. No KYC, no ID, no phone and no card.
  • 2. Top up the balance in crypto. Bitcoin, USDT, ETH or any of 300+ coins. The minimum top-up is $15.
  • 3. Deploy a server, or use one you already have.
  • 4. Add a disk on the server page, pick the size and confirm.
  • 5. Format and mount it with the commands shown, and use it.

FAQ

Which providers offer extra disks? Vultr, DigitalOcean and Hetzner. Which locations support them is checked live on the server page.

Can I move a disk to another server? No. A disk belongs to the server it was created for and is deleted with it.

Is my data backed up? No. Disks have no snapshots and are not included in server backups, so keep your own copies.

Can I make a disk smaller? No, only larger. To go smaller, create a new, smaller disk, copy the data over and delete the old one.

How much does it cost? A price per gigabyte per month, billed by the hour. The exact price for your server is shown before you confirm.

Do I need to verify my identity? No. An email is enough to sign up, and payment is in crypto.
